Fleece to Shawl Contest

Department 5 – Class 510 – Lot 1
Saturday 10am – 2pm
From fleece to finish product. The challenge of this team competition is to create a beautifully designed shawl and carefully finish the shawl in the shortest time possible while surpassing in excellence those of the other teams.

Premiums:
1st – Rosette and $200
2nd – Rosette and $175
3rd – Rosette and $150

Team captain and three additional members

Contest Rules

  1. This is a team competition. Each team consists of four members: three spinners and one weaver. Only the designated spinners may spin and only the designated weaver may weave. All members may card or wind bobbins.
  2. Once a team is registered a copy of the judging sheet will be sent to the team captain.
  3. Each team will identify themselves with distinctive signs, banners, and/or attire.
  4. Each team will begin with a fleece in lock formation, unwashed or washed and un-carded of any nature color. Natural dyed is accepted. Fleece may come from sheep, alpaca, goat, or rabbit.
  5. Each team will supply all equipment; fiber, spinning wheels, loom, chairs, cards, flickers, bobbin winders, etc. No electric equipment or drum carders.
  6. All equipment must be set up and ready by 9:30 a.m.
  7. Team members may begin at 10 a.m. at the signal of the judge and will stop at 2:00 p.m. at the signal of the judge. Team members may not leave the area once competition begins.
  8. All equipment repairs during competition must be done by team members.
  9. The competition will be judged on the following basis: team identification, spinning, weaving, and design. Each team captain will receive a copy of the judges’ score sheet once registrations are received.
  10. The finished shawl off the loom will be a minimum of 72” long (excluding fringe) and a minimum 18” wide. Each shawl will have a minimum of 5” of fringe.
  11. Each team will supply their own warp and thread the loom prior to the contest. The warp must be 100% natural fiber from sheep, alpaca, goat, or rabbit, handspun by team members, or commercially spun. Natural or dyed. The set is at the discretion of the team with a minimum of eight EPI. All preparation must be done by team members.
  12. Weft thread may not be more than three times the diameter of warp thread.
  13. Upon completion of the shawl, the team captain will indicate to the judge and s/he will hand the shawl over to the judge for judging.
  14. All shawls will be judged. Only shawls completed in the allotted four hours will be eligible for awards.

Spinning Bee

Dept 5 – Class 511
Saturday 4:30pm

From fiber to yarn. The challenge of this event is for participants to demonstrate their spinning skills with either a spinning wheel or a drop spindle.

Entry form must include names, addresses, and telephone numbers.
You must pre-register by 4:00 PM the day of the event at the Fiber Tent

1. Contestants must bring their own spinning wheel or drop spindle.
2. Each class will consist of a 10-minute spinning period.

Lot 1—Longest yarn-consistent-Spinning Wheel
Lot 2—Longest yarn-consistent-Drop Spindle
Lot 3—Thick and Thin Yarn (either)
Lot 4—Finest Yarn (either)

Premiums for Lots 1, 2, 3, 4:
1st: Rosette & $35
2nd: Rosette & $25
3rd: Rosette & $15

Fleece to Scarf Competition


Dept. 5 – Class 512
Sunday 10am–2pm
From fiber to a completed product. The challenge of this team competition is to create a beautiful designed knitted or crochet wearable article(s) and carefully finished in the shortest time possible while surpassing in excellence those of the other teams.

The competition will be judged on the following basis: team identifications, spinning, knitting/crocheting technique, and design/creativity. Teams must complete one scarf that is at least 6” wide and 30” long. Any additional items will be judged as a bonus. Each team captain will receive a copy of the judges’ score sheet once registrations are received.

Premiums:
1st: $150
2nd: $125
3rd $100

  4. Each team will begin with processed roving in the fiber of their choice (natural color fiber or dye).
  5. Each team will supply all equipment; fiber, spinning wheels, chairs, cards, flickers, knitting needles, or hooks. No electric equipment.
  6. All equipment must be set up and ready by 9:30 a.m.
  7. Team members may begin at 10 a.m. at the signal of the judge and will stop at 2:00 p.m. at the signal of the judge. Team members may not leave the area once competition begins.
  8. All equipment repairs during competition must be done by team members.
  9. The competition will be judged on the following basis: team identification, spinning, knitting/crocheting technique, and design/creativity. Teams must complete one scarf 6” x30”.  Additional wearable items suitable for an adult to wear such as hats, mittens, purse,s or accessories can be added. Bonus points for multiple items completed. Each team captain will receive a copy of the judges’ score sheet once registrations are received.
  10. Needles may not exceed #15 needles or # N 10mm crochet hook.
  11. Upon completion of the article, the team captain will indicate to the judge and s/he will hand the article(s) over to the judge for judging.
  12. All articles will be judged. Only completed articles in the allotted four hours will be eligible for awards.
